Understand the WIPSCT

OVERVIEW

Tanzania’s growing economy and diverse industries rely on strong procurement practices to support both public and private sector operations. The Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) oversees the country’s public procurement landscape, ensuring fairness, competitiveness, transparency, non-discrimination, accountability, and innovation in the procurement process. However, like many industries, procurement and supply chain management have historically been male-dominated, limiting  opportunities for women professionals.
The procurement process in Tanzania involves acquiring goods, works, and services through competitive bidding. It is governed by the Public Procurement Act of 2023 and regulated by the PPRA.

While public sector procurement falls under this framework, private sector procurement is not regulated by the Act but is professionally governed by PSPTB (Procurement and Supplies Professionals and Technicians Board).

While the number of women-owned businesses in Tanzania has grown, three-quarters remain micro-enterprises with just one employee, highlighting their instability. According to 2013 UN Women data, only 24% of Tanzanian businesses are owned by women, far below the Sub-Saharan Africa average of 34%.

This gap underscores the need for deliberate efforts to increase women's participation in procurement, this is for both professionals and women led/owned businesses
